In its present form, a financial system known as Islamic banking emerged in the 1960s as an ethical alternative to Western banks, acceptable for Muslims. Nowadays, Islamic financial institutions exist in more than 70 countries, primarily in the Middle East and Southeast Asia, as well as in some Western countries.
