On November 18th at 12:00 pm Moscow Time, the Valdai Club will host an expert discussion, titled “Results of the G20 Summit: Business as Usual?”

This year’s G20 summit took place against the backdrop of a confrontation between the West and Russia. Even before the opening of the summit, there were fears that geopolitical tensions could overshadow pressing economic issues and compel a number of delegations to refuse to attend the event. Nevertheless, the current summit was the most representative meeting of world leaders since the beginning of the pandemic.

The risk of a global economic recession is increasing all the time, and the G20 countries need to make a joint-effort to develop a coordinated anti-crisis policy. The summit discussed issues of food and energy security, and negotiations continue on the Black Sea “grain deal”, which expires in mid-November. Another important theme of the summit is the need to ensure the inclusiveness of the G20 in the future, with recent calls for African countries to enjoy greater representation, particularly via the African Union, in the decision-making process.

What are the main outcomes of the G20 summit in Indonesia? Should we expect the promotion of joint anti-crisis measures among the G20 members in the context of the global economic downturn? Can the current geopolitical tensions become an obstacle to the goals of the G20? These and other questions will be addressed by the participants of the discussion.
