On March 28 at 16:00 Moscow Time (GMT+3), the Valdai Club will present a new report titled “Crafting National Interests: How Diplomatic Training Impacts Sovereignty

The Valdai Club Report is the preliminary result of a large-scale study of global experience training diplomats. The authors assumed that the diplomatic training of different countries is developed to an unequal extent. At the same time, its importance is only growing amid the erosion of institutions and practices of international relations in the post-bipolarity period.

The report’s authors believe that in the emerging polycentric world, the training of diplomats can play a decisive role in the desire of nation states to achieve sovereignty. Among Western countries, they examined the USA, Germany, France, Finland and Poland. Of the “World Majority” states, the authors studied diplomatic training in India, Brazil, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, South Korea and Turkey.

To what extent are Western countries prepared to end the “strategic vacation” and return to competition? What traditions of training diplomats have the World Majority states acquired during the post-colonial period? Participants in the discussion will try to answer these and other questions.
